A visible symbol is not always one character

An emoji with skin-tone modifiers or a joined family sequence can contain several Unicode code points. JavaScript string length measures UTF-16 code units, so it can differ from both code point count and visible grapheme count. Our free counter reports code points and labels that choice.

Platform references are only the first check

Common reference limits are 2,200 characters for Instagram captions, 280 for a standard X post and 3,000 for a LinkedIn post. Account entitlements, API endpoints and weighted URLs may change what an editor accepts. Validate the final draft in the destination platform or publishing connector.

Write for scanning

Put the main message near the beginning, use line breaks sparingly and include a specific call to action. A shorter caption is not automatically more effective. Test a clear hypothesis with your own audience rather than relying on a universal “ideal length”.

Paste your draft into the free social caption counter, then check it in the post preview.
